KIDS TAG ART HOSTS THIRD ANNUAL HEART SMART ART AWARDS

Special Guest Wildlife Artist Stephen Koury Inspires Audience

01/18/14 - LAKELAND

This past Saturday, January 18 was Heart Smart Art Day at Polk Museum of Art, where Joe Tedder's Kids Tag Art program teamed up with Miami-based Florida Heart Research Institute to recognize heart-healthy designs as part of this year's countywide drawing contest. Ten talented fifth graders and their families were recognized for their creative heart-healthy design at the 3rd Annual Heart Smart Art Recognition Ceremony and Reception, hosted by The Florida Heart Research Institute of Miami, the sole sponsor of this event and the only one of its kind in the State. Sallie Byrd, Senior Vice President of Development at FHRI, presented each student with their tag art, a FHRI key chain and a certificate of achievement. The top three designs received their artwork framed in glass along with a small cash award.

As in years past, local world renowned wildlife artist Stephen Koury, a resident of Lakeland, spoke to the students and shared his enthusiasm for art with the crowd.

"Drawing takes your mind to that special place," Koury shared, encouraging the audience to use self-expression as a way to be well-rounded, to stay young and to manage stress. Koury is a widely-acclaimed wildlife artist, winning numerous awards and enjoyed by collectors throughout the world. US Art magazine has named him, "one of the great naturalists of our time." Students were able to view a powerpoint of Koury's work prior to the ceremony and afterwards had the opportunity to speak with the artist.

"We have partnered and sponsored the "Heart Smart Art Award" once again so that we can continue to encourage the youth to be mindful of being heart smart by inviting fifth graders to design a creative kid tag that communicates the mission to stop heart disease. The Florida Heart Research Institute is thrilled to participate in Kids Tag Art and stimulate children about healthy lifestyles", Sallie Byrd, VP Development, FHRI. Bryd is looking to expand the program next year to other counties who's tax collectors also host Kids Tag Art.
