Special Guest Wildlife Artist Stephen Koury Inspires Audience

01/18/13 - BARTOW

Friday, January 18, 2013 was Heart Smart Art Day at the Tax Collector's Office in Bartow, Florida.

Teaming up with Miami-based Florida Heart Research Institute for the second year, Joe Tedder's Kids Tag Art program hosted a reception with Sallie Byrd and Staci Ehrenkrantz of FHRI to recognize student art achievement.

Kids Tag Art, a program hosted by the Polk County Tax Collector's Office, in conjunction with major sponsor Southern Homes, presented its Heart Smart Art Awards to three young local artists. Stephen Koury, renowned local artist spoke to the crowd of over fifty guests including family, students, teachers and friends in the downtown tax lobby. Koury shared his life experience as a wildlife artist and brought images of his artwork that were broadcasted on wide screen monitors during the event. Tax Collector Joe G. Tedder was Master of Ceremonies for this event.

Presentations were made by the Florida Heart Research Institute to the three fifth graders whose artwork represented one of top two designs from each participating elementary school. From that field of work, top designs who best represented the theme 'Heart Smart Art' were selected.

Students receiving the award were Angelic Minjarez, Garner Elementary, Winter Haven, Savannah Taylor, Landmark Christian, Lakeland and Shawntel Mathews from St. Anthony's Catholic in north Lakeland.

"We have partnered and sponsored the "Heart Smart Art Award" once again so that we can continue to encourage the youth to be mindful of being heart smart by inviting fifth graders to design a creative kid tag that communicates the mission to stop heart disease. The Florida Heart Research Institute is thrilled to participate in Kids Tag Art and stimulate children about healthy lifestyles", Sallie Byrd, VP Development, FHRI. This is the second year for this award and the second year that the Florida Heart Research Institute has been a sponsor of Kids Tag Art.

A videotape of that event will be posted in the coming days. Please check back shortly.
