5th Graders Earn Kids Tag Arts Award

BARTOW, Florida/PR Free/June 5, 2012

Kids Tag Art, a 5th grade school art project created by the Polk County Tax Collector's Office will be honoring two fifth grade students this week for their artwork. These awards will coincide with the fifth grade graduation ceremonies and are an annual surprise recognition for students who's artwork best reflected the special award themes. Both ceremonies begin at 9:30 a.m.

On Wednesday, June 6, Joe Tedder along with major sponsor Southern Homes of Polk County, will present the "Home Sweet Home Award" to Sommer Baker, a fifth grader at Bethune Academy. Sommer's artwork was chosen through a contest hosted by Southern Homes on their Facebook page. Facebook fans chose her design as the best depiction of the "home sweet home" theme. Raedell Coogler is the art teacher at Bethune Academy.

On Thursday, June 7, Joe Tedder will present his "Tax Collector Choice Award" to Logan Barden of R. B. Wagner Elementary. " Logan's design was chosen based on what I would like on the front bumper of my car," stated Joe Tedder. As part of the recognition, the vanity tag with Logan's design will be displayed on the Tax Collector's vehicle for the coming year. At the conclusion of the graduation ceremony, together, Logan and Tedder will install the tag on Tedder's front bumper. Jessica Giles is the art instructor at R. B. Wagner.

ABOUT KIDS TAG ART

All proceeds from the sale of the tags goes back into each school's arts education program. The combined six-year total of monies for classrooms arts now tops $122,000.

In addition to major sponsor Southern Homes, other sponsors of Kids Tag Art this year include Douglass Screen Printers, Inc., Alphagraphics, Polk Education Foundation, Grasslands & OakBridge, Vecchio, Carrier and Feldman, P.A., and Florida Heart Research Institute. Polk Museum of Art, Junior Women's Club of Lakeland, Polk Arts Alliance, Lake Wales Art Center, and Polk County Schools partnered with The Polk County Tax Collector's Office in hosting the Kids Tag Art program.

According to Joe G. Tedder, Tax Collector for Polk County and the honorary chairman of the board, this year also marks the first year that it has grown beyond Polk County. Tax Collectors from Highlands County and Charlotte County have initiated Kids Tag Art this past year, with other tax offices around the state evaluating the program for their counties.

Tedder informed the School Board officials that this year's art was the best yet. "With 100% of the proceeds going back into the classroom to supplemental teacher supplies, you can see the enhanced level of instruction and performance that the teachers are achieving by just looking at the outstanding art being created. The proof of the success of this program is self-evident."
