Automated Telephone Calls Seek To Scam Taxpayers

BARTOW, Florida/ PR Free/ April 7, 2011

The Polk County Tax Collector's Office received word today that a telephone scam is circulating in Putnam County. The recording is erroneously informing homeowners that they are behind in their property taxes and will lose their homestead exemption if the taxes are not paid by a certain date. The homeowners are then instructed to call a number and give their bank account routing numbers.

The Tax Collector's Office warns property owners in Polk County to be aware and if they receive such a call, they should report the call to the Polk County Sheriff's Office at (863) 298-6200.

Joe Tedder, Tax Collector for Polk County advises property owners, "Our office currently does not use recorded telephone messages for outgoing collection calls. Moreover, our customers can always call the Tax Collector's Office at (863) 534-4700 with any questions they may have regarding their property tax accounts."
