VISA TELLS TAX COLLECTOR TO STOP TAKING THEIR CARD AT COUNTER

VISA is not everywhere; VISA cards not taken at local tax offices.

BARTOW, Florida/PR Free/April 28, 2009

Effective May 1, 2009, VISA will no longer be accepted at the counter in Tax Collector's Office branches.

In response to this development, Joe Tedder, Tax Collector, stated, "VISA's position is not feasible in the public sector. We hold to the policy that if a taxpayer wants to have the convenience of using VISA at the counter, then the card holder, not all taxpayers, should shoulder the additional costs."

The State of Florida has already weighed in on this issue by authorizing governing agencies conducting state business to accept credit card payments and charge a convenience fee.

"When I go to dinner at Sonny's and pay with cash, I know the price includes additional costs that allow someone else to use their VISA card. As Tax Collector, I can't do that. I am unable to add a little more onto everyone's tax bill to cover the other guy's VISA costs," said Tedder.
