Tedder Becomes President Of Florida Tax Collectors

BARTOW, Florida/PR Free/October 17, 2008

Joe G. Tedder, Tax Collector for Polk County, was recently installed as president of The Florida Tax Collectors, Inc., a professional association representing 67 tax collectors throughout the state of Florida. Tedder previously served as first vice-president and legislative chair for the association.

Ken van Assenderp, General Counsel to the FTCA, performed the swearing-in ceremony for Tedder at the organization's annual meeting. "I've worked with Joe for over 16 years; first when he served in the Legislature and for the past 12 years as Tax Collector. Over those years, I have witnessed Joe's integrity, honor, and the virtue of good decision-making."

Tedder was first elected Tax Collector for Polk County in 1996, recently winning his third consecutive re-election unopposed.

Fellow Tax Collector, Honorable Patsy Heffner from Osceola County was present for the installation. "Joe has been a guiding force in the Florida Tax Collectors Association for several years. His knowledge, his leadership skills and his ability to bring about consensus will have a positive impact on the Association and its members. We're all excited about Joe's presidency and I'm confident that under his leadership we will have a successful and productive year."

Tedder entered public office in 1992, serving as State Representative, District 64, for two terms. While in the legislature he also served as Vice Chairman on the Government Accountability to the People (GAP) Commission, a member of the Florida Commission on Education Reform and Accountability, and sponsored legislation on school reform and charter schools while in the Legislature.

Tedder is a graduate of Florida Southern College with a degree in Accounting. Prior to public life, Tedder worked for 11 years as an accountant with the firm Tedder, Grimsley and Company in Lakeland, Florida.

In the past year, tax collectors across the state have faced challenges with revenue shortfalls while the Legislature continues to look to them to provide additional state services, such as drivers' licenses, at the local level.

Honorable Ken Burton Jr., Florida Tax Collectors Association Past President, stated, "The FTCA faced one of their most challenging years this part year, and Joe Tedder played an integral part in our success meeting those challenges. I look forward to working with Joe as our president as we continue to make great strides toward our legislative and corporate goals."

As Tax Collector for Polk County, Tedder collects Florida's sixth largest tax roll in the state with a 135 full time employees and five branch offices throughout Polk County. He is also involved with numerous local boards and non-profits, including past president of United Way, American Heart Association, Leadership Lakeland and Chairman, Polk Vision Governmental Alliance Committee.
