OCCUPATIONAL LICENSES BECOME BUSINESS TAX RECEIPTS

OCCUPATIONAL LICENSES BECOME BUSINESS TAX RECEIPTS

?A tax by any other color is still a tax?
                                       - Joe G. Tedder

BARTOW, Florida/ PR Free/ July 25, 2007

The old ?Occupational License? name has a new face - it?s now called a ?Business Tax? and if you are engaged in a business in Polk County you will need to get one by September 30.

On August 1, the Polk County Tax Collector?s Office will be sending out over 40,000 business tax receipt renewal forms, according to Joe G. Tedder, Tax Collector for Polk County. The name change from ?occupational? to ?business tax?, changed in the Legislature last year, will take effect on this date.

?We don?t want the business community to be confused. This tax is in lieu of the annual Occupational License that Polk businesses have always filed. There is no increase in cost to local businesses,? Tedder explains. ?However, all entities of any kind doing business in Polk County are required to obtain a Business Tax Receipt.?

The state-wide name change was made to clarify the purpose for the tax assessed on businesses. This tax money is collected by the Tax Collector and distributed to the Polk County Board of County Commissioners to be used exclusively for economic development. Last year, more than $1 million was spent to recruit business and promote the economy in our community.

Any businesses operating in Polk County without a county occupational license should immediately contact the Tax Collector?s Office. Failure to timely renewal or obtain an initial license will result in substantial penalties.

To report businesses operating in Polk County without an Occupational License, please telephone the Tax Collector's Toll Free Hotline at 1-866-687-8876.
