MAXIMIZE YOUR TAX SAVINGS AND PAY YOUR TAXES

12/28/04 - BARTOW

Taxpayers get a 3% December discount for early payment if they walk-in their property tax payment on Monday January 3, 2005, but then they will lose the ability to write it off on your 2004 Tax Return if they wait that long.

Because Polk County Tax Collectors Office is closed on December 31, 2004, in observance of the New Year Holiday, the 3% December discount is being extended until January 3, 2005 for payments made in-person.

Property tax payments made through the mail must be postmarked on or before Friday, December 31st. Moreover, online tax payments must also be posted on or before Friday, December 31st.

Just because a taxpayer receives the 3% December discount doesn?t mean they can automatically write it off on their 2004 Tax Return. The IRS only allows persons to write off their property tax payment in the actual year it is paid. So, if a taxpayer makes a property tax payment in 2005, they will have to wait until they file their 2005 federal income tax return before writing it off.

Joe Tedder, Polk's Tax Collector, explained, "The time at which a person pays their property tax can be critical in their saving money. We really want to make sure everyone knows about these important dates and deadlines."

How does a property taxpayer make sure they get the 3% December discount and a 2004 income tax write off?

Pay your taxes in person at a Tax Collectors Office on or before Thursday, December 30 or have your payment postmarked no later than December 31, 2004.
