09/30/04 - BARTOW

In the aftermath of a brutal hurricane season, Governor Bush issued Executive Order No. 04-210 allowing for temporary roofing contractors to operate in Polk County, upon approval of the Board of County Commissioners.

Before engaging in roofing work, applicants are required to present an affidavit of competency from their original jurisdiction to the Inspections and Permits Office located on the First Floor of the County Administration Building in Bartow. They are required to and indicate that they have satisfactorily performed roofing work with wood shakes, asphalt or fiberglass shingles.

Applicants are also required to present proof of compliance with applicable workers compensation as required by Chapter 440, Florida Statutes.

Moreover, applicants must present proof of public liability and property damage insurance in the following amounts: $100,000 for liability and $25,000 for property damage.

Note: All roofing work is still required to be permitted and inspected.

The specialty roofing license shall be valid for a period of 90 days, and provides that all jobs permitted prior to the end of the 90 day period shall be allowed to be completed after the period has ended.

The BoCC has further decided not to waive the $75.00 fee nor any other fee, such as the county's occupational license tax.

Occupational licenses are available at any Polk County Tax Collector's Branch Office. Proof of a temporary specialty roofing license is required before an occupational license can be issued.
