Protect Yourself Against Home Repair Con Artists

Some con artists are using the County Occupational License as proof that they are qualified to do major or technical repair work that should only be done by those holding a State Contractor's License or a Competency Card issued by Polk Building Inspections Division.

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services warns those seeking home repairs in the aftermath of Hurricane Charlie to beware of con artist contractors.

To protect yourself:

Call the Florida's Consumer Hotline at 1-800-HELP FLA to find out the complaint history of a business.

Call the Construction Industry Licensing Board at (904) 727-6530 to make sure the contractor is licensed.

Contact your local county or city building inspector?s office and ask if they are familiar with the contractor.
