10/31/02 - BARTOW

Joe G. Tedder, Tax Collector, reports that his office will mail out its annual property tax notices to all of Polk County's property owners on Thursday, October 31, 2002.

The taxes due are for the 2002 tax roll and have a total taxable amount of $373,552,749. In comparison, last year's 2001 tax roll had a total taxable amount of $346,545,852.

2001 to 2002 Tax Roll Comparison: There is a 7.8% increase in taxes and assessments billed.*

*Note: Taxes and assessments billed reflect the rates determined by various Taxing Authorities multiplied, if applicable, by the assessed value on property determined by the Property Appraiser's Office.

Property owners should receive a separate bill for each piece of property they own according to the way the deed is recorded. However, failure to receive a tax notice for a particular piece of property does not relieve the property owner of their obligation to pay their taxes, as Florida law makes taxpayers responsible for knowing that their property taxes are due each year.

This year's tax notice includes an insert to help answer taxpayer questions. The insert provides instructions and information, including a listing of taxing and levying authorities and their telephone numbers, as well as a brief description of taxes and/or assessments that may appear on an individual's tax bill.

Property owners who do not receive their property tax notice(s) by Wednesday, November 13th should contact the Tax Collector's Office at one of the following local access telephone numbers (863 area code):

Bartow 534-4721; Lakeland 603-6498; Lake Wales 678-4671; Winter Haven & Haines City 298-7578.
