TAX COLLECTOR'S LETTER TO THE EDITOR ON REGISTRATION RENEWALS

TAX COLLECTOR'S LETTER TO THE EDITOR ON REGISTRATION RENEWALS

02/25/00 - BARTOW

Dear Editor:

I am writing to get an important message out to all of Polk?s vehicle owners:

PLEASE RENEW YOUR VEHICLE REGISTRATION AND TAG ON OR BEFORE YOUR BIRTHDAY (OR THE EXPIRATION DATE INDICATED ON YOUR REGISTRATION) BECAUSE YOU MIGHT NOT GET A VEHICLE REGISTRATION RENEWAL NOTICE!

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) recently reported that about 7% of Florida?s owners are not getting their vehicle registration renewal notices. This is due to a data conversion problem associated with FRVIS 2000, DHSMV?s new state-wide computer system.

More importantly, Florida law makes the owner responsible for renewing their vehicle registrations and tags on time. That means a failure to receive a renewal notice will not relieve owners from having to renew their vehicle registrations on time.

Not renewing your registration and tag on time can result in individuals being subject to the following:

A late registration renewal penalty; When a registration and tag are expired for six months or longer, a 2nd degree misdemeanor conviction.

All owners need to know is that their vehicle registrations expire on their birthday (exceptions include company owned vehicles and some lease vehicles). And, that vehicle registrations and tags may be renewed at anytime 90 days prior to their expiration.

Also, if you have not received your renewal notice at least two weeks prior to your birthday (or the registration expiration date), just call our office and we will send you the information you need to complete your vehicle registration and tag renewal by mail. Our Telephone numbers are: 534-4711 in Bartow, 499-2351 in Lakeland, 678-4295 in Lake Wales and 298-7577 in Winter Haven and Haines City.

Thank you for this opportunity to get this important message out to the people of Polk County.

Sincerely,

Your Tax Collector - Joe G. Tedder, CFC
